The AW101 Midlife Update is the mid-life upgrade of the AW101 helicopter, a three-engine rotorcraft used for transport, search and rescue and military missions. With Giannuzzi SRL we worked on the new cabin lining, the Internal Liner.
For the AW101 helicopter Internal Liner Midlife Update project, we conducted FE analyses aimed at identifying critical components for static and vibration testing. Our intervention included the Test Rigs Project, qualification test planning, and the related review.
From analysis to test rigs in the AW101 Midlife Update
First, we analysed the panels and attachments of the new lining with FE models, to understand which components were really critical. As a result, testing focused on the right parts instead of testing everything.
Then we designed the rigs for static and vibration tests: rig structure, boundary conditions and load introduction. Finally, we planned the qualification tests and reviewed them, comparing measurements with the analysis. So the client had one team from the first model to the final test report. This also made each review meeting shorter and every decision easier to trace.
Why it matters in a mid-life upgrade
In a mid-life upgrade the new components must work with an existing structure that nobody can change freely. For this reason, we designed analysis, rigs and tests together, so that the liner could pass qualification with as few repeated tests as possible.
This project touches three of our services: FEM simulation, structural verification and testing and qualification. It is also a good example of work with a supply chain company, which must hand the manufacturer checks that are ready to accept.
